About Dehradun

Once a city of Grey hairs and Green Hedges, with more than it's fair share of National Organisations, Dehradun is now the bustling capital of Uttarakhand. While the roads in the centre of the city fail to cope with the rising mobility of the population, one can easily retire to quieter areas with stunning Himilayan Views.

Must See Locations are:

The Forest Research Institute - FRI, built in the style of an English Country house, in a large park. It's disapointing inside though with museum exhibits that haven't been updated in decades.

Hatipaon - Elephants Foot, up beyond Mussourie, the derelict home of Sir George Everest, has wonderful surroundings and views.

Robbers Cave - never actually found a cave, but there's a lovely gorge with a stream running through, and delightful countryside.

Mussourie (Library end), the hill station 15 km out at 6,000 ft, a feast for the newly weds and plains folk escaping the summer heat, very tatty. The Company Garden is a little gem, and when the Savoy Hotel finally gets finnished, it'll be worth stopping for tea.

The Sikh Temple, that started it all.

Wikipedia does an excellent article on the city.

There's a lovely flavour of Dehradun from an Australian taking a Hindi Class in Winter at the White House, "Beep, Honk, Clatter - the sounds of outdoor Hindi" ...page3

Not forgetting the hippy delights of Duhn with George Harrison's "Dehra Dun".
